English Language Arts Standards
Reading Standards for Literature
R.L. 3.1- Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of text, referencing text for answers.
R.L.3.2-Retelling stories, including fables, folktales, and myths. Determine a central message, moral and explain it conveyed text.
R.L.3.3-Describe characters in a story and how their actions contribute to the sequence of events.
R.L. 3.4-Determine word/phrase meanings and distinguish literal from non-literal language.
R.L. 3.5- Refer to parts (chapter,scene, stanza) of stories, dramas, and poems; describe how successive parts build on earlier sections.
R.L.3.6-Distinguish personal point of view from that of the narrator/and or characters.
R.L. 3.7- Explain how the illustrations contribute to what is written in the story.
R.L.3.9- Compare/contrast the story elements of books written by the same author or similar characters.
R.L. 3.10- Read/comprehend 2-3 literature (including stories, stories and drama poetry). Independently and proficiently by the end of the year.
R.L. 3.11-Make connections in narratives, poetry and drama to other texts, ideas, cultural perspectives, personal events, and situations.
Reading Standards for Informational Text
R.I.3.1-Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of text, referencing text for answers.
R.I. 3.2- Identify the main idea of text, explaining how details support the main idea.
R.I. 3.3.- Describe the connection between a series of historical events, scientific ideas/concepts, or steps in a technical procedure in a text.
R.I.3.4-Determine the meaning of academic words/phrase relevant to grade three.
R.I. 3.5- Efficiently use text features and search tools to locate information about a given topic.
R.I. 3.6- Distinguish personal point of view from that of the author.
R.I. 3.7-Use illustrations and words in text to demonstrate understanding of text.
R.I. 3.8- Describe the logical connection between particular sentence and paragraphs.
R.I. 3.9-Compare/contrast important points and key details presented by two texts of the same topic.
R.I. 3.10- Read/comprehend the high end of grades 2-3 informational texts.
Writing Standards
W.3.1- Write opinion piece by introducing topic/book, stating opinion and organizational structure with reasons, using linking words to connect opinion with reasons, provide conclusion.
W.3.2- Write informative/explanatory texts to clearly examine topic and information: introduce topic and group related topics together; include useful illustrations; develop point using facts and definitions, linking words and phrases; provide conclusions.
W. 3.3- Write a real or imagined narratives using effective technique, descriptive details, and a clear sequence. Establish a situation, use dialogue and description of actions/thoughts/feelings; use temporal words, and provide closure.
W.3.4- With help, produce writing in which the development and organization are appropriate to task, purpose, and grade level.
W. 3..5- With adult and peer support, develop and strengthen writing by planning, revising and editing according to grade three standards.
W. 3.10- Write routinely over extended and short time frames for specific tasks, purposes, and audiences.
Math Standards
3.NBT.1- Use place value understanding to round whole numbers to the nearest 10 or 100.
3.NBT.2 Fluently add and subtract within 1000 using strategies and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.
3.OA.1 Represent and solve problems involving multiplication and division. Interpret products of whole numbers, e.g., interpret 5 × 7 as the total number of objects in 5 groups of 7 objects each.
